Wrapping up a week of lemons, coconuts, and bee pollen I found a free Zumba class at our local community center.
Just being honest, I’d never Zumba’d before. I’ve danced on competitive teams, took ballet as a girl. I get the whole “step-ball-change” thing. I’ve heard Zumba is pretty challenging, has more of a salsa style rhythm, and can be a blast. I thought…sure I’ll give it a twirl.
I found myself doing really odd solos, turning the wrong direction, starting on the wrong foot, not getting the whole concept of starting on the “and beat”. I swear at one point the instructor only used 3 steps in a 4 count and it messed with my head so bad to hold on that 4! I laughed so much, I didn’t mind looking like a newbie fool. At least I didn’t run into anyone, or step on someone’s foot. Yikes.
Since having my left Achilles reconstructed a couple years ago, I was so happy to keep up on any level. My left foot felt more alive after that class, and the calf spasms I usually get at night have reduced.
By the time we were done, I was smiling like I haven’t smiled in a year. I felt lighter in my spirit. Sweaty, red faced, laughing and Happy are 4 things I haven’t been in a long time. I will go back.
I’m so grateful for a new exersize, a free class to go to on Mondays and Wednesdays, a way to dance again after after Achilles reconstruction, good laughter, and good sweat.
Have you Zumba’d? What do you think?
